On Wednesday, Democrat Luz Rivas secured a victory in her election bid for a U.S. House seat in California.
She is set to take over the position previously held by fellow Democrat Tony Cárdenas, who chose not to run for another term.
Rivas has been a member of the state Assembly since 2022 and has prior experience as a commissioner on the Board of Public Works for the City of Los Angeles.
Her constituency includes the north-central region of the San Fernando Valley, which comprises areas such as Van Nuys, Pacoima, Panorama City, as well as portions of Sun Valley and North Hollywood.
Rivas triumphed over Republican opponent Benito Bernal in the election.
The announcement of her victory was made at 12:13 a.m. EST.
