On Tuesday, Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson secured his reelection for a seat in the U.S. House, representing the state of Mississippi. Thompson triumphed over Republican challenger Ron Eller, who has a background as a military veteran and works as a physician assistant.

Thompson’s political career began with his service as mayor of Bolton and a Hinds County supervisor before he was elected in a special election in 1993 to the 2nd Congressional District, which encompasses a significant portion of Jackson. Notably, he is the sole Democrat within Mississippi’s congressional representation.

During his extensive career, Thompson has held prominent positions, including a previous chairmanship of the House Homeland Security Committee, and he currently serves as the ranking member on that committee. Additionally, he led the House committee that looked into the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

As the evening progressed, the result was confirmed, with news outlets announcing Thompson’s victory at 11:07 p.m. EST.
