On Tuesday, John McGuire, a Republican, secured a victory for a U.S. House seat in Virginia, maintaining the position for his party.
McGuire, who has previously served as a state senator and is a former Navy SEAL, triumphed over Democrat Gloria Witt, a newcomer in the political arena and an executive coaching business owner.
McGuire emerged as the Republican nominee for the 5th District after a closely contested primary race in which he narrowly defeated the incumbent Rep. Bob Good last June.
Following a recount of the primary votes, election officials confirmed that McGuire edged out Good by a margin of less than 375 votes, with the total vote count nearing 63,000.
The announcement of McGuire’s victory was made at 10:52 p.m. EST.
