Democrat Alma Adams has secured her spot in the U.S. House of Representatives after emerging victorious in the election held on Tuesday.
Adams triumphed over Republican competitor Addul Ali in North Carolina’s heavily Democratic 12th Congressional District, centered around the city of Charlotte.
Adams initially entered Congress in 2014, winning a special election to replace Mel Watt after his resignation.

Before her tenure in Congress, Adams was a college art professor and served on the Greensboro City Council.
Following that, she spent two decades in the North Carolina State House.
Throughout her congressional career, Adams has been a staunch advocate for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), even co-founding the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus.
The announcement of her victory was made at 10:34 p.m. EST, solidifying her continued representation of her constituents.
