AP Race Call: Colorado electorate passes constitutional measure protecting abortion rights

0

Colorado residents voted in favor of a state constitutional amendment on Tuesday, solidifying protections for abortion rights. This new measure nullifies a previous prohibition on using state and local funds for abortion services and permits government health insurance, such as Medicaid, to include abortion coverage. Abortions have been legal in Colorado at any point during a pregnancy. In 2022, Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, enacted legislation that not only ensured access to reproductive healthcare both prior to and following pregnancy but also prohibited local jurisdictions from imposing their own abortion restrictions. To amend the state constitution, a majority of 55% of voters must be in agreement. The amendment was announced as passed at 10:27 p.m. EST.
