Democratic Representative Terri Sewell secured her seat in the U.S. House for Alabama on Tuesday, continuing her role in Alabama’s 7th Congressional District.
She successfully defeated Republican challenger Robin Litaker to maintain her position.
Sewell, who made her initial congressional entrance in 2010, has consistently pushed for laws aimed at updating and reinforcing the Voting Rights Act throughout her tenure.
Notably, she holds the distinction of being the first Black woman elected to Congress from the state of Alabama.
The 7th District encompasses significant urban areas like Birmingham and Selma, as well as various rural counties in western Alabama.
The announcement of Sewell’s victory was made at 10:24 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
