Democrat Yassamin Ansari secured a victory in the election for a U.S. House seat in Arizona on Tuesday.
As the daughter of Iranian immigrants and a former vice mayor of Phoenix, Ansari campaigned with a strong emphasis on progressive values, vowing to uphold democracy and ensure reproductive rights.
In her race for the 3rd District seat, which encompasses much of Phoenix, she emerged victorious over Republican candidate Jeff Zink.
Ansari’s journey to the general election included a nail-biting Democratic primary, where she won against her rival by a mere 39 votes, a result that led to an automatic recount.
The announcement of her win came at 10:05 p.m. EST, solidifying her place in the upcoming legislative session.
