On Tuesday, Republican Representative Barry Loudermilk successfully secured reelection for a seat in the U.S. House, representing Georgia. At the age of 60, Loudermilk has now begun his sixth term in Congress, overseeing a district that spans from the Atlanta suburbs in Cobb County to parts of northwest Georgia.

Facing off against him was Democratic challenger Katy Stamper, who was criticized by many within her own party for being a moderate and for allegedly commandeering the Democratic ballot line. Many Democrats opted to support an alternative candidate, Tracey Verhoeven, and encouraged voters to officially write her name in on their ballots. The counting of write-in votes is scheduled for a later date, adding an element of uncertainty to the final outcome.

Loudermilk, an Air Force veteran hailing from Cassville, has a background in state politics, having previously been elected for four terms as a state legislator. The victory was announced at 9:21 p.m. EST, signaling a continuation of Loudermilk’s tenure in Washington.
