Republican Representative Morgan Griffith successfully secured reelection for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia on Tuesday.
Griffith achieved his eighth term by defeating Democrat Karen Baker, who has a background as a lawyer and previously held the position of administrative law judge for the Social Security Administration.
Griffith, also a lawyer by profession, has been involved in public service since 1994, beginning his political career with his election to the state legislature.
The 9th Congressional District, which Griffith represents, encompasses the southwestern region of Virginia and has consistently leaned Republican since his victory over longtime Democratic incumbent Rick Boucher in 2010.
At 9:09 p.m. EST, it was announced that Griffith had emerged victorious in the election.
