Democratic Representative Deborah Ross successfully secured reelection for her position in the U.S. House, representing North Carolina.
This victory marks her second term in Congress, as she defeated her Republican opponent Alan Swain, along with a candidate from the Green Party.
Ross’s constituency includes much of the area surrounding Raleigh, the state capital.
A recent redistricting effort by the state Legislature has resulted in an even more favorable political environment for Ross, transforming her 2nd Congressional District into a stronger Democratic territory.
Previously, Ross worked as a lobbyist for the American Civil Liberties Union and as an attorney for a transportation agency, in addition to serving over ten years in the state House.
She also attempted to secure a U.S. Senate seat in 2016, although that effort did not succeed.
The announcement of her victory was made at 9:03 p.m. EST.
