Republican Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska secured his election victory on Tuesday for the Senate position he was appointed to nearly two years ago.
Ricketts, who previously served two terms as Nebraska’s governor, won against his Democratic opponent, 81-year-old Preston Love Jr., a well-known community advocate from Omaha.
In the lead-up to the election, Love depicted Ricketts, known to be one of the wealthiest senators, as living a life of privilege and disconnected from the everyday concerns of voters.
Nevertheless, Ricketts achieved a decisive win in a state that largely leans conservative.
His victory allows him to complete the remaining two years of the six-year term that was left open after the resignation of former Republican Senator Ben Sasse in 2022.
The results were announced at 9:00 p.m. EST, confirming Ricketts’ success in the race.
