Democratic Representative David Scott successfully secured his reelection on Tuesday for a U.S. House seat that covers parts of Georgia. At 79 years old, Scott prevailed over Republican challenger Jonathan Chavez in Georgia’s 13th District, which encompasses various southern and eastern suburbs of Atlanta. This marks Chavez’s second attempt at a Congressional seat; he previously lost to a Democratic candidate in a different district the year before.
Scott, who holds the position of ranking Democratic member on the House Agriculture Committee, continues his lengthy tenure in Congress, having won his 14th term despite facing criticism regarding his age and claims of being disconnected from current issues. Back in May, Scott managed to overcome six Democratic rivals in the primaries, in a district that underwent significant redistricting since the previous election cycle in 2022. The announcement of Scott’s victory was made at 8:03 p.m. EST.
