On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris secured victory in Maryland, adding its 10 electoral votes to her tally.
Maryland, known for its strong Democratic leanings, has a significant population of federal employees, given its proximity to Washington, D.C.
Approximately 30% of the state’s population identifies as Black, marking it as having the highest percentage in this demographic outside the Deep South.
The Democratic presence in Maryland is overwhelmingly dominant, with registered Democrats outnumbering Republicans by a ratio of 2 to 1.
The state’s political landscape is also shaped by the unpopularity of former President Donald Trump among its voters; in the 2020 election, he garnered only 32% of the total vote.
Additionally, it is noteworthy that no Republican candidate has won a presidential election in Maryland since George H.W. Bush claimed victory there in 1988.
As the evening progressed, the announcement of Harris’s win was made at precisely 8:00 p.m. EST.
