The Buffalo Bills have decided to part ways with safety Mike Edwards after attempts to trade him before the NFL deadline failed on Tuesday.
Edwards, who joined the team as a free agent in the offseason, expressed his desire for a trade a few weeks prior due to his limited playing opportunities. This season, he participated in only three games and has been inactive for the last four.
After winning his second Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in the previous season, Edwards was expected to secure a starting safety position upon signing a one-year deal in March. However, a series of injuries prevented him from participating fully in the team’s offseason activities and a significant portion of training camp, leaving him as a backup to starters Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin.
Before joining the Bills, Edwards played four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he also celebrated a Super Bowl victory during the 2020 season.
In another significant update, the Bills have placed edge rusher Dawuane Smoot on injured reserve after he sustained a wrist injury during a recent nail-biting 30-27 victory against the Miami Dolphins. Head Coach Sean McDermott announced that Smoot will need surgery but is expected to return before the season concludes.
