COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina forward Ashlyn Watkins has had the legal charges against her dropped, as per online court documents.
Watkins faced serious allegations of assault and kidnapping as of August 31. Since then, she has been serving a suspension from the women’s basketball team and missed out on joining her teammates during their visit to the White House in September, where they were honored by President Biden for their championship victory.
According to court filings, the dismissal of Watkins’ charges was recorded on November 1. However, there was no update regarding her status concerning the suspension from the team.
The Gamecocks, currently ranked first in the nation, kicked off their season with a tightly contested 68-62 win over Michigan in Las Vegas. Their next challenge will be a matchup against No. 9 N.C. State on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Last season, Watkins was instrumental in South Carolina’s undefeated 38-0 championship run. The 6-foot-3 forward led the Southeastern Conference in blocks with a total of 91. She averaged 9.2 points per game and ranked second on the team with 7.4 rebounds, just behind WNBA first-round draft selection Kamilla Cardoso.
Watkins made history by achieving the first two dunks in the South Carolina women’s basketball program during her freshman and sophomore years.
As she prepares to return to the court, Watkins is anticipated to take on an even more significant role within the team moving forward.
