The Washington Commanders are set to acquire cornerback Marshon Lattimore in a trade with the New Orleans Saints, as confirmed by several sources familiar with the transaction.
Washington is sending a trio of draft picks—specifically, a third-round, a fourth-round, and a sixth-round pick—to New Orleans, while receiving Lattimore and a fifth-round pick in return, according to two of the insiders. These individuals requested anonymity, as the deal was still in the finalization process on Tuesday.
At 28 years old, Lattimore represents a significant enhancement to the Commanders’ defensive lineup. This comes as Washington surprises many by achieving a strong 7-2 record this season, leading them to make moves as they seek a playoff position. Lattimore is expected to join cornerbacks Benjamin St-Juste and rookie Mike Sainristil in the secondary, complementing standout safeties Jeremy Chinn and Quan Martin.
The decision to trade Lattimore signifies a further shift within the Saints organization, especially after they parted ways with head coach Dennis Allen following a disappointing seventh consecutive loss. Lattimore, who earned the title of AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2017 and has been selected for the Pro Bowl four times, has struggled with hamstring injuries in recent seasons, which has caused him to miss several games and fueled ongoing trade speculation.
