An explosion took place at an oil refinery in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday, according to local authorities, who assured that the situation was “under control” and reported that there were no injuries or fatalities.

Mayor Tahir Buyukakin informed private broadcaster NTV that the incident happened at the Turkish Petroleum Refineries, known as Tupras, located in the Izmit province during what were described as “routine drills.”

The fire resulting from the explosion was swiftly managed by the refinery’s own emergency response teams, and there was no need to request external assistance, he added.

Images from the scene revealed smoke billowing from the refinery, though the specific cause of the explosion remains unclear at this time.
