ISLAMABAD — On Tuesday, Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, touched down in Pakistan’s capital for a two-day official visit aimed at discussing several significant topics, such as the current tensions in the Middle East and ways to further enhance bilateral relations, according to officials.

Araghchi’s arrival occurred just after midnight, and he was welcomed by Pakistani dignitaries at the airport near Islamabad. Throughout the day, he is scheduled to confer with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and other officials from the Foreign Ministry.

This visit takes place during a period of escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. Recently, Iranian officials have ramped up their rhetoric, threatening potential military action against Israel following an attack on October 26 that struck various Iranian military installations and resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals.

In light of these developments, Pakistan has condemned Israel’s actions, expressing solidarity with Iran. The Foreign Ministry of Pakistan issued a statement underscoring that this visit presents a significant opportunity to enhance cooperation and dialogue between the two nations across numerous sectors, including trade, energy, and security.

Moreover, Iran has been striving for years to revive a long-delayed multi-billion dollar gas pipeline project that was initiated in 2013. This project aims to transport Iranian natural gas to Pakistan, which is currently seeking solutions to its energy shortages. However, the initiative has been stalled since 2014 due to opposition from Washington, which views it as a breach of sanctions imposed on Iran regarding its nuclear program.
