Washington, D.C. — In an impressive display, Darren Buchanan Jr. netted 19 points, helping George Washington secure a 76-59 victory over Mercyhurst on Monday evening.
Buchanan also made his mark with a double-double, gathering 10 rebounds and tallying three steals throughout the contest. Trey Moss contributed significantly to the win, scoring 17 points while shooting 50% from the field (6 for 12). He had a challenging night from beyond the arc, managing just one 3-point basket out of five attempts but capitalized at the free-throw line, converting four out of five attempts. Rafael Castro added 16 points to the scoreboard, showing remarkable efficiency by shooting 6 of 8 overall and achieving a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line.
For Mercyhurst, Jeff Planutis led the scoring efforts with 21 points. His team-mates, Shemar Rathan-Mayes and Aidan Reichert, contributed as well, chipping in 11 and seven points, respectively.
The game featured a significant momentum swing when George Washington went on a 15-2 run during the first half, enabling them to level the score. As the teams headed into halftime, the score stood at 29-29, with Buchanan leading the Revolutionaries in points scored during the first half at 12.
In the second half, George Washington found their rhythm, opening with a 10-0 run to extend their narrow lead to 11 points. They dominated the latter part of the game, outscoring Mercyhurst by 17 points in the second half alone, with Moss stepping up as the leading scorer for his team by adding 13 points after the break.
