MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Twins have decided to activate their $1.5 million club option for reliever Jorge Alcala, hoping he can bounce back after experiencing challenges towards the end of what started as a promising season.
In the 2024 campaign, Alcala concluded with a 3.24 ERA over 54 appearances, racking up 58 strikeouts across 58.1 innings pitched. However, he struggled with eight home runs allowed and issued 20 walks. Before the All-Star break, Alcala was performing well, featuring a noteworthy 1.56 ERA in 34.2 innings. Unfortunately, after the All-Star festivities, his performance dipped, yielding a 5.70 ERA over the next 23.2 innings pitched. This decline in form ultimately led to his demotion to Triple-A in mid-September, despite the Twins facing difficulties in their bullpen while vying for a playoff spot.
At 29 years old, Alcala was brought to the Twins in a trade deal with Houston back in 2018 that involved reliever Ryan Pressly. He made his Major League debut with Minnesota in 2019, but injuries have hindered his contributions over the years. Throughout his career, he has posted a 3.64 ERA over 163.1 innings in the big leagues.
In other team news, the Twins recently opted to forego their options for 2025 on infielder Kyle Farmer and outfielder Manny Margot, thereby allowing both to enter free agency.
