REMERTON, Ga. — A weekend shooting in Lowndes County, Georgia, has left two men deceased and an officer injured. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, which took place in Remerton, a favored neighborhood among Valdosta State University students. The altercation reportedly began on Friday, November 1, around 1:30 a.m. when two individuals engaged in a dispute outside a local bar. At the time, four sheriffs were working off-duty details in the vicinity as a precaution due to usual nightlife activities.

Following the initial argument, a second volley of gunfire erupted, leading two additional deputies to respond. According to reports from the GBI, one of the deputies was struck during this subsequent exchange of fire and was transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, officials expect him to recover from his injuries. The investigation has confirmed the fatalities of two other men involved in the shootout, but details about the incident remain unclear. While police did recover firearms at both sites, information regarding the number of rounds fired, the identities of those who discharged the weapons, and the status of any suspects is still unknown.

Residents in the area have expressed increasing anxiety over safety issues, especially since this marks the second fatal shooting in the same location this year. One local resident shared, “I mean, I don’t even want to go to the bars because I never know what’s going to happen,” during an interview with a local television station.

Earlier this year, a tragic event occurred involving 21-year-old Valdosta State University student Brianna Long, who lost her life due to a stray bullet while she was cleaning at a bar in this same neighborhood around Halloween. In response to her death, the Remerton Police Department has implemented new safety measures, enhancing surveillance through the installation of additional cameras and increasing officer presence in the area.
