DES MOINES, Iowa — A teenager from Iowa was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for his involvement in a deadly drive-by shooting that took place in 2022 near East High School in Des Moines.
Alex Santiago Perdomo, 17, had entered a guilty plea last year for charges of first-degree murder. At the time of the incident, he was just 15 years old; however, according to the Polk County prosecutor, he will be eligible for parole in the future. Public defense attorneys for Perdomo did not respond to requests for comments regarding the sentencing on Monday.
According to law enforcement officials, Perdomo was one of ten teenagers, aged between 14 and 18, who were armed with at least six firearms. They drove in multiple vehicles to a neighborhood located just half a mile away from the Iowa Capitol near East High School. Although the exact nature of their intentions remains unclear, authorities indicated that the group was aiming to resolve a personal conflict, which resulted in them opening fire on Jose Lopez, his sister, a friend of hers, and two additional teenagers who were standing on the sidewalk.
The gunshots struck Lopez, his sister, and her friend, leading to Lopez’s death while the two girls sustained serious injuries.
Perdomo becomes the second juvenile from this group to be handed a life sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree murder. A third teen, who also pleaded guilty to similar charges, is scheduled for sentencing next year when he turns 18, according to prosecutors. Additionally, four other teenagers who accepted plea deals for second-degree murder received sentences ranging from 20 to 70 years in prison, while another individual who admitted to supplying a firearm to a minor was given a suspended sentence of four years.
Two more defendants who were part of this case faced charges that resulted in them receiving 20-year prison sentences for their involvement in various other criminal activities related to the shooting.
