MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers may be looking at significant changes in their starting rotation for the upcoming season, as both right-handed pitchers Frankie Montas and Colin Rea are set to enter free agency.

On Monday, the Brewers announced that Montas opted out of his part of a $20 million mutual option for 2025. Meanwhile, the team declined the $5.5 million club option on Rea’s contract. As a result, Montas will receive a $2 million buyout, and Rea will get $1 million.

In addition to these roster changes, Milwaukee made a few more moves on the same day. Right-hander Kevin Herget was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets, while left-hander Rob Zastryzny was picked up by the Chicago Cubs. First baseman Jake Bauers and righty Bryse Wilson successfully cleared waivers and were assigned to Triple-A Nashville.

Montas, who is 31 years old, recorded a combined record of 7-11 this season, boasting a 4.84 ERA with 148 strikeouts over 150 2/3 innings across 30 starts for the Cincinnati Reds and the Brewers. After being acquired just prior to the trade deadline, he made 11 starts for Milwaukee, where he achieved a 3-3 record with a 4.55 ERA.

Rea, now 34, had a solid season with a 12-6 record and a 4.28 ERA over 32 appearances, including 27 starts. He tallied 135 strikeouts across 167 2/3 innings, though he faced challenges in September, finishing with an 8.31 ERA. Notably, he was omitted from the Brewers’ roster for the NL Wild Card Series.

Looking at the other transactions, Herget, 33 years old, didn’t lose any games, recording one save and a 1.59 ERA in seven appearances with Milwaukee this year. At Triple-A Nashville, he was more effective, posting a 5-1 record with four saves and a 2.27 ERA over 38 games.

Zastryzny, age 32, appeared in nine games for Milwaukee and went 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA. He had been performing well at Nashville, too, with a 4-0 record and a 3.03 ERA across 30 games.

The 29-year-old Bauers hit .199 with a .301 on-base percentage, alongside 12 home runs and 43 RBIs in 116 games this season. Notably, he contributed a home run in the seventh inning of Game 3 in the Wild Card Series against the New York Mets, although the Mets rallied to win the game 4-2.

Meanwhile, Wilson, who will celebrate his 27th birthday on December 20, finished the season with a 5-4 record and a 4.04 ERA in 34 appearances, including nine starting roles.
