LINCOLN, Neb. — The No. 23 ranked Nebraska women’s basketball team kicked off its season with a strong performance, defeating Omaha 88-48 on Monday night.

Leading the charge was Alexis Markowski, who posted an impressive double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Markowski, a 6-foot-3 senior center, has earned recognition for her abilities; she was the top scorer and rebounder for the Cornhuskers last season and is once again a contender for the Naismith Trophy in her final collegiate year. She showcased her efficiency by shooting an impressive 7 for 8 from the field.

Also contributing significantly to the team’s scoreline was Natalie Potts, last season’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year, who brought in 14 points for Nebraska. Another standout from the previous year, Logan Nissley, who was also named to the conference All-Freshman team, chipped in 12 points, reinforcing the team’s depth.

Additionally, Allison Weidner, returning from an extended injury layoff of 55 games, marked her comeback with an 11-point performance. Freshman Britt Prince, recognized as a two-time Nebraska high school player of the year, made her presence felt with 10 points.

For the Mavericks, Alana Powell emerged as a key player, scoring 15 points, while her teammate Grace Cave added 11.

Nebraska set the tone early in the game, starting with an aggressive 16-2 run. By halftime, they had established a commanding lead of 47-15, largely due to a dominating second quarter where they outscored Omaha 26-4. This surge included a flurry of 12 consecutive points capped off by a 3-pointer from Potts just before the halftime buzzer.

Overall, it was a promising start to the season for Nebraska, showcasing the talent and resilience of their roster as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
