On Monday, Nathan Eovaldi, a two-time All-Star starter, officially entered free agency after opting not to accept a $20 million player option from the Texas Rangers.

Eovaldi qualified for this option by surpassing 300 innings pitched over his two-year stint with the Rangers, having joined the team as a free agent two years prior. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the Rangers’ World Series victory in 2023, securing a win in the decisive game against Arizona, where he achieved an impressive 5-0 record across six postseason starts. Eovaldi also contributed to Boston’s championship run in 2018.

Chris Young, the president of baseball operations for the Rangers, expressed that the organization remains keen on bringing back the 34-year-old right-handed pitcher, who hails from Texas.

In his last two seasons, Eovaldi compiled a strong record of 24 wins and 13 losses, boasting a 3.72 ERA over 54 starts. In the 2023 season alone, he finished with a 12-8 record and a 3.80 ERA across 29 starts. He capped off the season with a remarkable performance, throwing seven scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels, although the Rangers fell short of postseason play.

Eovaldi has had a diverse career, becoming the sixth Major League team he has played for. In total, he has a record of 91 wins and 81 losses, accompanied by a 4.07 ERA through 294 career games, which includes 275 starts. His career began back in 2011 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he has also played for teams such as Miami, the New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay.

His contract with the Rangers was valued at $34 million, which incorporated a $16 million salary for each of the last two seasons along with a $2 million signing bonus. Additionally, Eovaldi received various bonuses for being named an All-Star in 2023 and for achieving specific inning-pitched milestones throughout his time with the team.
