COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Monday, a jury convened to evaluate the case of a former police officer facing charges of murder and reckless homicide in relation to the shooting death of Andre Hill, a Black man who was caught holding a cellphone and keys when he was fatally shot.
The announcement of the jury’s decision is anticipated to be made soon.
Officer Adam Coy, who dedicated nearly two decades to the Columbus police department, shot Hill four times in a garage nearly four years prior to the trial. Following the incident, which drew significant media attention, Coy was terminated from his position. During the trial, he claimed to jurors that he believed Hill was in possession of a silver revolver at the time of the incident.
Body camera recordings captured the moments leading up to the shooting, showing Hill inside a friend’s garage with a cellphone raised in his left hand, while his right hand remained out of sight just moments before Coy discharged his weapon. Following the shooting, there was a delay of almost ten minutes before emergency response officers began to provide assistance to Hill, who was left bleeding on the garage floor. He was later declared dead at a nearby hospital.
