ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers made significant organizational changes on Monday by promoting Ross Fenstermaker to general manager, hiring Cole Figuerora as assistant general manager, and appointing Justin Viele as their new hitting coach.
Fenstermaker’s promotion comes shortly after Chris Young received a multi-year contract extension and was elevated from general manager to President of Baseball Operations. Young, who played a key role in guiding the team to its inaugural World Series victory last year, continues to hold the primary decision-making authority regarding baseball operations.
Having spent the last three years as the assistant GM focusing on player development and international operations, Fenstermaker has a robust history with the Rangers, beginning his journey as a baseball operations intern back in 2010. The 38-year-old has been instrumental in player development and managing minor league operations, while also overseeing the team’s international amateur scouting initiatives.
Figuerora joins the Rangers after an eight-year tenure with the Tampa Bay Rays, where for the past three years, he served as the director of baseball operations. His previous roles included working on baseball strategy, assessing player markets, and ensuring the long-term growth of the baseball operations team.
Meanwhile, Viele, set to turn 33 next week, transitions to the Rangers after spending five seasons as a hitting coach with the San Francisco Giants. Notably, he collaborated with current Rangers coach Donnie Ecker during the 2021 season, a year when the Giants achieved a franchise-high of 241 home runs.
Viele takes over the hitting coach position from Tim Hyers, who recently joined the Atlanta Braves as their hitting coach after spending three seasons with the Rangers in the same capacity.
