Supreme Court to consider new predominantly Black congressional district in Louisiana following the election

The Supreme Court announced on Monday that it will review a significant redistricting case concerning Louisiana’s congressional map, which includes two predominantly Black districts.

Arguments are not expected to be heard until early next year, leaving the 2024 elections to proceed using the contested map. This map could potentially enhance the odds for Democrats aiming to regain control of the closely divided House of Representatives.

While a lower court had ruled against the map, the justices permitted its use for the upcoming elections following an emergency request from both the state and civil rights organizations.

The key question before the justices is whether the state’s formation of a second majority Black district was overly influenced by racial considerations.

Monday’s order marks yet another development in the ongoing federal court disputes concerning Louisiana’s congressional districts, a legal struggle that has persisted for over two years.

This situation follows two instances where Louisiana’s congressional maps have faced rejection by lower courts, prompting the Supreme Court to intervene on two separate occasions.
