Nick Sirianni, head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, might have sidestepped criticism after making questionable calls that, ultimately, did not pay off. In contrast, coaches Mike McCarthy of the Dallas Cowboys and Sean Payton from the Denver Broncos faced substantial repercussions for their risky decisions.
It’s easy to analyze and criticize game-time decisions when they don’t succeed. The Eagles managed to triumph over the Jacksonville Jaguars with a narrow score of 28-23 on Sunday, largely due to a key interception in the end zone by linebacker Nakobe Dean. If that interception hadn’t occurred, Sirianni would have likely been regretting his choice to forgo nine potential points. During the game, the Eagles failed to convert on two fourth-down attempts, opting to continue drives rather than kicking two field goals from inside 45 yards. Additionally, they fell short three times on two-point conversions, with Jalen Hurts being stopped during the notorious “tush push” attempt twice.
“We have had a decent track record with these decisions in the past,” Sirianni noted. “You constantly contemplate every option available: who we have, previous experiences, and the analytics. At that moment, I always strive to do what’s best for the team. Today’s choices didn’t pan out, which is part of the job. I have to accept that. When we convert on fourth down, no one questions it, but when we don’t, I anticipate the critiques.”
The Eagles squandered a commanding 22-0 lead and found themselves on the brink of defeat as the Jaguars advanced to a first down at the 13-yard line with just 1:42 remaining. However, Trevor Lawrence’s misguided pass aimed at D’Ernest Johnson allowed Dean to make a pivotal interception, securing the Eagles’ fourth consecutive victory, sitting at 6-2 for the season.
Despite the win, Sirianni’s controversial choices continued to dominate media discussions following an eventful game that also featured highlights like Saquon Barkley’s remarkable jump over a defender and DeVonta Smith’s stunning one-handed touchdown catch.
Meanwhile, McCarthy’s strategy also fell flat during the Cowboys’ 27-21 loss against the Atlanta Falcons. In the second quarter, with Dallas trailing 7-3, McCarthy decided to go for fourth-and-1 at Atlanta’s 44-yard line. CeeDee Lamb was tackled for a three-yard loss on a jet sweep, allowing the Falcons to capitalize on the turnover. Eventually, Kirk Cousins would connect with Darnell Mooney on a fourth-and-3 for a 36-yard touchdown, extending the Falcons’ lead to 14-3.
With the score at 14-10, McCarthy made a baffling choice to attempt a fake punt on fourth-and-2 from their own 38-yard line. The pass from punter Bryan Anger was incomplete after C.J. Godwin slipped, granting the Falcons excellent field position, leading them to another touchdown.
“We’re inflicting too many wounds on ourselves,” McCarthy acknowledged. Dallas, currently 3-5, has now lost three consecutive matchups leading into a crucial game against Philadelphia next. Dak Prescott’s availability is uncertain due to a hamstring injury that kept him out of the fourth quarter.
In Denver, Payton recognized the need for a high-scoring effort to keep pace with the dynamic Ravens, leading him to adopt a proactive strategy early in the game. However, on the Broncos’ second possession, Javonte Williams was halted for no gain on fourth-and-1 from the Ravens’ 44-yard line. Baltimore capitalized on this shortcoming, marching down the field to score a touchdown and go up 7-0.
Payton chose not to attempt a 51-yard field goal on the next possession, opting to go for it on fourth-and-4 from the Ravens’ 33-yard line, but Bo Nix’s long pass fell incomplete, and Baltimore subsequently added a field goal to their score. Ultimately, Denver finished just 1 for 5 on fourth-down attempts, resulting in a heavy 41-10 defeat to the Ravens.
“I believe certain games require a distinct strategy,” Payton said in defense of his aggressive approach. “We felt this game warranted a change in strategy, considering the strength of the opponent.” Ultimately, the risk does not always translate into reward.
