HENDERSON, Nev. — In an effort to address their ongoing offensive struggles, the Las Vegas Raiders made significant changes to their coaching staff, dismissing offensive coordinator Luke Getsy on Sunday night. This decision comes less than a year after Getsy was brought on board.
Additionally, the team has parted ways with quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello and offensive line coach James Cregg, both of whom had also been with the organization for under a year.
These coaching changes were announced shortly after the Raiders suffered a 41-24 defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals, marking their fifth consecutive loss and bringing their record to a dismal 2-7 for the season.
Midseason coaching changes have become a familiar pattern for the Raiders, who have now experienced turnover of head coaches or coordinators during the season for four out of the last five years. Their recent history includes the late-season firing of defensive coordinator Paul Guenther in 2020, the abrupt dismissal of coach Jon Gruden five games into the 2021 season due to controversy surrounding surfaced emails, and Josh McDaniels being let go after just eight games last season.
Getsy was brought in despite a lackluster tenure as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, and his impact on the Raiders’ performance has not been favorable. The team has struggled offensively, ranking at the bottom of the league with 19 turnovers and averaging just 3.48 yards per carry on the ground. They also placed near the bottom in several other offensive categories, including yards per play (4.6), passer rating (80.1), and points scored per game (17.9). This inefficiency has persisted regardless of who has been playing quarterback.
While the Raiders did start some games well under Getsy, scoring touchdowns on the opening drive in four of their last five contests, the team only managed to accumulate four additional touchdowns across 50 combined drives in those games. Notably, three of those touchdowns came in situations where the Raiders were trailing by 20 or more points in the final five minutes of play.
