GLENDALE, Ariz. — Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson found himself out of the starting lineup for the game against the Arizona Cardinals after his recent mental error.
Although he was dressed and ready to play on Sunday, the coaching staff opted to start Terell Smith in the right cornerback position instead.
Stevenson’s recent blunder occurred during a nail-biting moment in the previous week’s game against the Washington Commanders. With only two seconds remaining on the clock, he turned his back and gestured to fans just as the Commanders executed a Hail Mary pass, ultimately leading to a heartbreaking 18-15 defeat for the Bears. According to head coach Matt Eberflus, Stevenson’s responsibility was to block Commanders’ receiver Noah Brown, but he was late arriving to the play, allowing Brown to score the game-winning catch with a 52-yard reception.
Following the incident, Stevenson took the initiative to apologize to his teammates on Monday, acknowledging that he had let the team down. However, it was reported that he momentarily left practice on Wednesday upon discovering that he would not be starting against the Cardinals.
Coach Eberflus stated that any disciplinary measures regarding the situation would be managed internally, emphasizing team protocol.
