‘Venom 3′ Continues Box Office Dominance as Tom Hanks’ Movie Falters

“Venom: The Last Dance” had another strong performance at the box office, securing its position at the top over the weekend. The film, featuring Tom Hardy, generated an estimated $26.1 million in ticket sales, as reported by studio figures on Sunday.

This past weekend was relatively calm for North American cinemas, particularly with the upcoming presidential election. The box office was predominantly made up of established titles, such as “Venom 3,” “The Wild Robot,” and “Smile 2.” In contrast, the much-anticipated reunion film “Here,” starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright and directed by Robert Zemeckis, failed to resonate with viewers, debuting with a mere $5 million across 2,647 theaters.

“Venom 3” experienced a modest 49% decline in its second weekend, a commendable figure for a superhero film, especially since it had a quieter opening than typical for the genre. After just two weeks, the film has already grossed over $90 million in the U.S., an impressive figure considering that the franchise’s previous films both opened with over $80 million. Its international performance is even more promising, having already surpassed the $300 million mark globally.

In the second position, the animated film “The Wild Robot,” produced by Universal and Illumination, continues to draw in audiences even after six weeks of release, managing to gross $7.6 million. The film has accrued over $121 million domestically and $269 million worldwide. Following closely was “Smile 2,” which rounded out the top three with $6.8 million, bringing its global earnings to $109.7 million.

The newly released film “Here,” which is based on a graphic novel and scripted by “Forrest Gump” writer Eric Roth, was produced by Miramax and distributed by Sony’s TriStar. With its unique storytelling technique involving a fixed-position camera that captures the passage of time in a single living room, it failed to impress critics, receiving a low 36% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Completing the top five was the Focus Features thriller “Conclave,” which earned $5.3 million. The film, featuring strong performances, played in 1,796 theaters and experienced a slight 20% drop from its opening weekend, accumulating $15.2 million in total so far. Additionally, two Indian films, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” and “Singham Again,” made successful debuts, making their way into the top 10.

Lastly, Jesse Eisenberg’s film “A Real Pain,” which tells the story of cousins visiting Holocaust sites in Poland, premiered in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles this weekend. The film brought in an estimated $240,000, averaging $60,000 per screen—ranking among the top three highest per-theater earnings of the year. Searchlight Pictures has plans to broaden the movie’s release to over 800 theaters nationwide starting November 15, following its positive reviews.
