NEW YORK — Daniel Romanchuk ended Marcel Hug’s impressive three-year reign as the men’s wheelchair champion at the New York Marathon, claiming victory in the race on Sunday.
Hug, the Swiss athlete known as the Silver Bullet, had dominated the marathon circuit with 16 consecutive victories, which included a gold medal at the recent Paris Paralympics and a win at the Chicago Marathon just weeks earlier.
In the women’s wheelchair division, Susannah Scaroni showcased her exceptional talent by dominating the competition, marking her second victory in this marathon, having previously won in 2022.
Hug made history by becoming the first para-athlete to win the Abbott World Marathon Majors series title after securing first place in all six marathons in the previous year, taking titles in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York.
Despite a strong start, the 38-year-old Hug found himself in the leading group for the initial 15 miles of the race until he was clipped by another competitor, which noticeably impacted his pace.
The competition shifted into a thrilling three-way race featuring Romanchuk, David Weir, and Tomoki Suzuki. As they approached the final mile, the trio was separated by mere seconds. Romanchuk, a previous winner of this marathon in 2018 and 2019, surged ahead to finish in a time of 1 hour, 36 minutes, and 31 seconds.
David Weir, who was the runner-up in 2021 and a champion in 2010, finished just 5 seconds later, while Tomoki Suzuki rounded out the top three, finishing with a time of 1:36:43.
Hug ultimately secured a fourth-place finish, crossing the line 3 minutes and 38 seconds after the winner.
