LORMAN, Miss.
— A pivotal touchdown run by Marcus Harris II in the fourth quarter propelled Alabama State to a narrow 21-17 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday evening.
Harris sprinted for a crucial 19-yard touchdown, which was the highlight of a seven-play drive spanning 73 yards. This came after Alcorn State had taken a brief 17-14 lead with Anthony Williams’ impressive 17-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Kareem Keye, the Hornets’ quarterback, went 14 for 20 in passing, amassing 145 yards. Despite the Hornets (5-3, 4-1 in the Southwest Athletic Conference) only achieving 12 first downs and a total of 242 yards, they managed to secure the win.
Conversely, Alcorn State (4-5, 3-2) racked up 428 yards; however, two crucial interceptions hindered their performance.
The game started with Alabama State making an early impact through a defensive play, as Keane Lewis scored on a pick-six. Following this, Alcorn State responded with a significant 90-yard drive that culminated in Tavarious Griffin’s 1-yard touchdown run, leveling the score at 7 as they headed into halftime.
In the latter part of the third quarter, Alabama State regained the lead at 14-7, thanks to a 43-yard touchdown reception from Eric Horn off a pass from Keye.
Alcorn State then made a comeback by scoring the next 10 points, which included a field goal and Williams’ rushing touchdown, setting the stage for the Hornets’ decisive drive.
