RICHMOND, Va. — Camden Coleman connected with Landon Ellis for two touchdown passes, leading Richmond to a 35-24 victory over Towson on Saturday, thus keeping them tied for first place in the Coastal Athletic Association.
The Spiders, who now stand at 7-2 with a perfect 5-0 in conference play, are currently ranked No. 12 in the FCS coaches’ poll. This victory not only secured their unbeaten streak in the CAA alongside Rhode Island but also marked their longest winning streak and best start in the conference since 2015, coinciding with their homecoming celebration.
Coleman initiated the scoring with a 13-yard touchdown throw to Ellis, and they later combined for a 10-yard touchdown reception just before halftime, allowing Richmond to lead 19-10 going into the locker room.
In a pivotal moment early in the fourth quarter, Jabril Hayes made a spectacular 90-yard interception return for a touchdown, increasing the Spiders’ advantage to 29-17. Hayes also played a crucial role on defense by recovering one of Towson’s three fumbles, while Jeremiah Grant contributed by recording three of Richmond’s seven sacks.
The Spiders’ offense was bolstered by the kicking prowess of freshman Sean O’Haire from Ireland, who successfully converted five field goals, helping the team score on seven different possessions throughout the matchup.
Coleman ended the game with 230 passing yards, with 110 of them going to Jerry Garcia Jr. Meanwhile, Zach Palmer-Smith was a significant contributor on the ground, rushing for 98 yards on 28 carries.
For the Tigers, Sean Brown threw for 275 yards, including a highlight 80-yard touchdown pass to John Dunmore, who totaled 123 receiving yards. The Tigers now hold a record of 4-5 with a 2-3 mark in conference play.
