Osasuna honors its coach and remembers flood victims in Valencia with soccer triumph

MADRID — In a heartfelt tribute following his decisive goal, Ante Budimir displayed a jersey that read “Be strong Valencia” after securing a 1-0 victory for Osasuna against Valladolid in the Spanish league on Saturday.
Budimir and his teammates dedicated their win to the victims of the devastating floods that recently struck the Valencia region, particularly to their coach, Vicente Moreno, who hails from the area and had earlier shared an emotional account of the tragedy during a press conference.

Moreno, originally from Massanassa—a city significantly impacted by the floods—expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of over 200 lives in southern Spain. During his interview, he was visibly moved as he spoke about the disaster and the people affected. Due to a suspension, Moreno was unable to coach from the sidelines during Saturday’s match.

“We dedicate this victory to Vicente because he is going through a tough time,” remarked Osasuna’s assistant coach, Daniel Pendín. “He truly deserves this and we want to honor him with this success.”

The floods also led to the postponement of two first-division matches scheduled for Saturday: Real Madrid versus Valencia and Villarreal’s game against Rayo Vallecano. Additionally, three matches from the second division that were meant to take place in the region were also rescheduled.

Budimir’s winning goal came from a penalty kick in the 19th minute, pushing Osasuna into fourth place in the standings with 21 points after 12 matches played. In contrast, Valladolid remains in a difficult position, having lost five of their last six league encounters and sitting second-to-last with just eight points.

In another match on Saturday, Girona managed to halt a two-game losing streak, defeating Leganes 4-3. Miguel Gutiérrez, who netted Girona’s opening goal, also participated in honoring those affected by the recent floods by showcasing a “Be Strong Valencia” shirt.

Looking ahead, Barcelona, currently at the top of the league, will face Espanyol in a city derby on Sunday. Meanwhile, fifth-placed Atletico Madrid will host 18th-placed Las Palmas, aiming to reclaim a spot in the top three after suffering three consecutive losses across all competitions.
