BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles announced on Saturday that they have chosen not to exercise a $16.5 million contract option for outfielder and designated hitter Eloy Jiménez, making him a free agent.
As part of his contract, Jiménez will receive a $3 million buyout, concluding a $43 million, six-year deal originally signed with the Chicago White Sox. Jiménez was acquired by the Orioles from the White Sox on July 30 in exchange for left-handed pitcher Trey McGough. During his time with Baltimore, Jiménez struggled, finishing with a batting average of .232, one home run, and seven RBIs in 100 plate appearances. His overall season stats reflect a .238 average, six home runs, and 23 RBIs.
Approaching his 28th birthday on November 27, Jiménez was sent to Triple-A Norfolk on September 24 and did not participate in the playoffs with the Orioles. Over six seasons in Major League Baseball, he has maintained a .269 batting average, along with 95 home runs and 298 RBIs.
As part of the trade agreement, the Chicago White Sox are sending $4 million to Baltimore, and an additional $1.5 million will be given to the Orioles due to the option being declined. Consequently, Jiménez’s effective cost to the Orioles will be reduced to approximately $1,763,441.
