A man suspected of fatally shooting two individuals in a rural region of northern Austria earlier this week was discovered dead on Saturday, according to law enforcement officials.
The body of the alleged gunman, identified as Roland Drexler, was located in Upper Austria province, near the border with the Czech Republic, following a thorough search for the suspect.
Police spokesperson David Furtner indicated that it is believed Drexler may have taken his own life, as a firearm was recovered at the scene in the woods close to where his body was found.
Authorities had been on the lookout for Drexler since Monday, when the remains of a man were uncovered in a field in the nearby village of Altenfelden. While the police did not disclose the identity of the victim, Austrian media suggested that he was a local mayor. On the same day, the body of a second individual, reported to be a hunter, was also located.
Drexler’s body was discovered near his vehicle, which had previously been seen by locals on Friday in proximity to the location of the first murder.
Currently, there are no updates regarding a potential motive for the tragic events. The newspaper Kurrier mentioned that 56-year-old Drexler was known to be a hunter and allegedly had a dispute related to hunting regulations with his victims.
