SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Wave has announced that their last regular-season match will be held at Lynn Family Stadium, home of opposing team Racing Louisville, due to unsuitable field conditions at Snapdragon Stadium. This game is scheduled for Sunday evening in Louisville, Kentucky.
“The safety and health of all players remains our highest concern, and the current state of Snapdragon Stadium’s field, managed by a third party, does not meet the safety standards necessary for a competitive game,” the Wave expressed in a statement released on Friday.
Fans who have already purchased tickets for the original venue will receive more information in the coming days. The Wave is also organizing an official watch party for those unable to attend the away match.
Snapdragon Stadium is primarily used by the San Diego State Aztecs football team. Issues with the field surface were particularly evident during a recent game against Washington State.
Next season, the stadium is set to welcome the new Major League Soccer team, San Diego FC.
In a response shared on social media, Snapdragon Stadium acknowledged that while the current visual quality of the field does not meet ideal standards, they are prepared for the upcoming match, assuring safety conditions. The facility pointed to various factors, such as high usage and weather conditions, that have impacted the turf, but emphasized their commitment to enhancing the field with new resources and advanced technologies.
San Diego State has engaged Oak View Group for managing the stadium, including its grounds. However, attempts to reach them for comments remained unanswered.
“We sincerely apologize to our dedicated fans and promise that we are collaborating closely with stadium management to rectify these issues,” the Wave concluded. “Our players, supporters, and the entire community deserve the best possible environment for every match.”
