The New York Yankees made a significant move on Friday by exercising a $2.5 million option for pitcher Luke Weaver for the 2025 season.

Weaver stepped up as the Yankees’ closer in September, taking over the role from Clay Holmes. He had an impressive season, achieving a record of 7-3 with a 2.89 ERA and recording four saves. Over the course of 84 innings pitched, he struck out 103 batters while allowing 26 walks.

The 31-year-old right-handed pitcher also made a notable impact during the postseason, where he recorded a 1-0 record and a 1.76 ERA with four saves. His contributions helped the Yankees secure their first American League pennant since 2009, although they ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

Weaver was initially claimed off waivers by the Yankees from the Seattle Mariners in September 2023. After completing the season, he entered free agency and subsequently re-signed with the Yankees in January for a $2 million contract. This agreement included an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses, reflecting his contributions to the team’s successful campaign.
