A tragic incident unfolded in central Sri Lanka on Friday when a bus transporting university students on an excursion veered off the road and overturned, resulting in the loss of two young lives and injuring 39 individuals, as reported by local authorities.

The accident took place near Badulla, a town situated in the scenic yet rugged mountainous tea-growing area of the country, approximately 330 kilometers (205 miles) from Colombo, the nation’s capital. The police confirmed that the driver lost control of the bus while navigating a curve, leading to the vehicle’s unfortunate roll-over.

Footage broadcast by Derana television showcased the community coming together, as residents assisted emergency personnel in rescuing the injured from the mangled bus. Medical personnel reported that a total of 39 individuals were taken to Badulla’s primary medical facility, with six of those in a critical state. Unfortunately, the grim toll also included the deaths of two students.

Bus accidents resulting in fatalities are not uncommon in Sri Lanka, frequently attributed to careless driving practices coupled with the poor condition of roadways. Safety measures and regulations surrounding public transportation are an ongoing concern in the region, highlighting the need for better enforcement and infrastructure improvements.
