ANAHEIM, Calif. — In a recent development, the Los Angeles Angels have secured outfielder Jorge Soler from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning. The trade, which was made public on Thursday, marks a significant move for both teams.
Jorge Soler, known for his power-hitting capabilities, has had an impressive career spanning over 11 seasons in Major League Baseball, playing for five different teams. The Cuban-born athlete gained notable recognition as the Most Valuable Player in the 2021 World Series while playing with the Braves. Moreover, Soler was part of the Chicago Cubs team that clinched the championship in 2016, adding a prestigious ring to his achievements.
During his time with the Kansas City Royals in 2019, Soler led the American League in home runs, achieving a career-high of 48 home runs that season. In 2023, he earned his first All-Star selection as a member of the Miami Marlins. Currently, Soler has two years remaining on the three-year, $42 million deal he inked with the San Francisco Giants earlier this year before they traded him back to the Braves on July 29 for a second stint with the franchise.
Last season, while playing for both the Braves and the Giants, Soler recorded 21 home runs and 64 RBIs, finishing with a .780 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS). The previous year, he also showcased his power by hitting 36 home runs for Miami.
On the other hand, Griffin Canning hails from Orange County and was picked in the second round of the draft. He has been part of the Angels’ starting rotation for six seasons, contingent on his health. In 2020, he received a Gold Glove award, but his 2022 season was a complete wash due to a back injury.
In the 2023 season, Canning made a career-high 32 starts, posting a record of 6 wins and 13 losses, along with a 5.19 ERA. The Angels, unfortunately, wrapped up the season with the poorest record in the franchise’s history.
