NEW YORK — I had an unexpected realization about the necessity of work-life balance during a particularly stressful moment while working on a major news article during the pandemic. My heart began racing uncontrollably, causing a wave of panic to wash over me as I fought to regain control.
As I attempted to utilize a breathing technique I had learned for managing my heart palpitations due to a rare congenital defect, I experienced a black-out moment, only to regain my vision shortly thereafter. This incident prompted me to understand the urgent need for medical intervention, leading to a recommendation for a defibrillator implant. My cardiologist stressed the importance of reducing stress levels, a suggestion I struggled to implement, especially as a parent with a young child.
In light of this health scare, followed by a cancer diagnosis, it became critical for me to prioritize wellness. As part of my journey towards better health, I’m starting a new initiative titled “Working Well.” Through this series, not only will I explore my own methods for enhancing workplace well-being, but I will also share expert advice and strategies for those looking to achieve similar improvements.
The past few years have brought significant challenges to many of us: a global pandemic costing lives, parents managing full-time jobs without childcare, and the emotional toll of political divisions and world conflicts. These experiences have understandably led to heightened levels of burnout among workers. However, amidst these difficulties, there has emerged a collective consciousness regarding the opportunity to reshape our professional lives into healthier versions. Many companies have started implementing hybrid work models, while younger generations increasingly emphasize the importance of mental well-being. Additionally, employers are introducing in-house wellness initiatives, including yoga sessions and stress management programs.
I am committed to contributing to the ongoing dialogue around workplace wellness. In the coming months, I plan to engage with a variety of healthcare professionals, corporate leaders, and wellness coaches about the modifications they are advocating to enhance employee well-being — changes that you might also want to incorporate into your work life.
My pursuit of work-life balance became intensely personal after receiving my defibrillator. I began exploring a four-day workweek to carve out time for exercise, healthy cooking, and necessary breaks. Just when I felt I was finding my rhythm, a routine mammogram revealed breast cancer, leading to surgery, chemotherapy, and extensive treatments complicated by my existing heart condition.
Though daunting, this life-changing diagnosis forced me to adopt a more mindful approach to my health. For the first time, I listened closely to my body’s signals. Rather than resorting to caffeine for afternoon fatigue, I opted for restful naps. I planned my chemotherapy sessions to ensure I would have the energy to participate in significant events in my son’s life, such as his first day of kindergarten and his birthday celebration.
Motivated by my oncologist’s advice to remain active, I discovered the therapeutic benefits of swimming, yoga, and gentle exercise. I adjusted my routine based on how I felt each day, allowing myself to rest when necessary and gradually increasing my activity levels as my strength improved. I also began exploring acupuncture and meditation, discovering a wealth of support networks available for individuals facing cancer, which made a significant difference.
At one point, I was seeing multiple therapists who provided valuable coping strategies. I recall a moment of intense anxiety en route to a PET scan when I applied a calming technique suggested by one of my therapists. By anchoring my focus on my surroundings and engaging my senses, I was able to ease my panic and regain composure.
Eventually, I recovered enough to return to the workplace, albeit changed by the experience. The lingering effects of treatment loomed large, raising questions about my ability to thrive at work while maintaining my health. Nevertheless, I was determined to sustain the wellness practices cancer had compelled me to adopt. Writing about these experiences and sharing stories that uplift others will be integral to my ongoing commitment to personal well-being.
In the “Working Well” series, I will highlight the journeys of inspiring individuals who have overcome challenges and made strides towards better health. Topics will range from negotiating work schedules to managing health concerns in the workplace.
I invite you to share your own experiences with workplace wellness. Have you faced significant barriers in your job? Have you integrated healthier habits into your routine?
