Schenectady, N.Y. — This Halloween, trick-or-treaters in the Northeastern United States will experience exceptionally warm weather, a notable change from colder years when they bundled up in costumes like Bluey and Beetlejuice.
Forecasts indicate that New York City may reach a high of 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.5 degrees Celsius) on Halloween, with Boston projected to see temperatures peak at 76 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius). In Caribou, Maine, the thermometer is expected to hit 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius), a significant increase from the average Halloween temperature of 47 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius).
Buffalo, New York, might set a record with temperatures soaring to 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius), contrasting sharply with last Halloween when light snow was reported.
According to climatologist Samantha Borisoff from the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University, this year’s temperatures are about 20 degrees Fahrenheit above the seasonal norm. Borisoff emphasized that October can present a wide range of weather patterns, making each Halloween unique.
This year’s warm weather stands in stark contrast to previous years, particularly 2011, when a severe Nor’easter swept through the Hudson Valley just before Halloween, leaving heavy, wet snow in its wake. The following year, Halloween was marked by the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, which impacted the New York City area shortly before the holiday and resulted in approximately $65 billion in damage.
However, revelers are advised to take advantage of the mild weather while it lasts, as temperatures are predicted to revert to seasonal averages starting Friday.
