Police are currently on the lookout for a man who shot and injured a state trooper in New York on Wednesday night during a routine traffic stop on Long Island.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. on the Southern State Parkway in West Hempstead, as reported by state police.

Following the shooting, the assailant escaped in a black sedan that is likely a Dodge Charger, which has distinctive custom matte gray dual exhaust tips and a temporary license plate from New Jersey, according to a post by state police on social media.

The injured trooper was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he is reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities have not yet revealed the trooper’s identity or provided details surrounding the events leading to the shooting, but they confirmed that he is affiliated with Troop L, which is responsible for policing Long Island.

The investigation into the shooting led to the closure of the westbound lanes of the parkway, which remained shut down until around 6 a.m. Friday.
