Gas blast in southern Russia results in 4 fatalities and 4 injuries

A gas explosion in a residential complex located in southern Russia on Thursday resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left an additional four injured, according to local emergency services.

The incident took place early in the morning in Cherkessk, a city situated in the Karachay-Cherkessia region, which is near the border with Georgia. The explosion caused significant damage, impacting two upper floors of a five-story building, as reported by emergency officials.

In response to the explosion, Russian authorities have initiated a criminal investigation, focusing on potential violations of safety regulations. Gas explosions in residential settings have unfortunately been a recurring issue in Russia over the years.

For instance, in August, a similar gas explosion demolished part of another five-story residential building located in the Ural Mountains, resulting in the deaths of 11 people. Recent figures from Russian state news previously indicated that from early 2022 to August 1, 2024, there have been at least seven recorded gas explosions, collectively claiming more than 50 lives.
