OKLAHOMA CITY — In a commanding display, Lu Dort netted 20 points and Chet Holmgren contributed 19, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 105-93 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night. This win keeps the Thunder as the sole undefeated team in the Western Conference.
In addition to Dort and Holmgren’s performance, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recorded 18 points while Jalen Williams rounded out the scoring with 12 points, along with eight assists and seven rebounds. The Thunder have impressively won all four of their matches this season, each by a margin of at least 12 points.
For the Spurs, Harrison Barnes was the leading scorer with 18 points, while Jeremy Sochan added 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Chris Paul further contributed with 14 points and nine assists. However, Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio’s highly-touted rookie, struggled in his matchup against Holmgren, scoring only six points on a mere 1-for-5 shooting, although he did manage to collect eight rebounds and block three shots.
Observations from the game reveal that while Wembanyama showcased competitive spirit against a strong Thunder team, the rest of the Spurs squad’s performance fell short. The team was only able to shoot 41.2% from the floor and had difficulties creating scoring opportunities for their emerging star, culminating in a season-low total of 93 points.
Meanwhile, the Thunder demonstrated resilience when Gilgeous-Alexander was off his game. Despite being one of the league’s leading scorers with an average of 28.7 points per game, he struggled to find his shot, finishing 7 of 20 from the floor, including only 2 of 10 from 3-point range.
A crucial moment in the game occurred when the Spurs narrowed the deficit to 82-75 in the fourth quarter. The Thunder responded with a decisive 9-2 run, even with Gilgeous-Alexander resting on the bench. Rookie Ajay Mitchell was instrumental in this push, scoring five points, which helped the Thunder regain a firm hold on the game. By the time Gilgeous-Alexander returned to the court, Oklahoma City led 93-81 and maintained a comfortable 103-87 advantage when he ultimately sat out for the last 2:46 of the game.
One significant statistic underscored the Thunder’s performance, as they successfully launched 17 of their 41 attempts from beyond the arc, while the Spurs managed 12 of 36 from long range.
Looking ahead, the Spurs are set to take on the Jazz on Thursday, whereas the Thunder will face the Trail Blazers on Friday night.
