Bridgeport, Connecticut – An incident occurred in the dining hall of the University of Bridgeport, where a shooting took place, resulting in one injury and prompting a lockdown on campus as authorities searched for the suspect involved.
Local law enforcement reported that the injured individual was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, while the assailant remained at large late into the evening. The campus was secured until around 6 a.m. Wednesday, when officials lifted the lockdown, declaring the event an “isolated incident” with no ongoing threat to the campus community.
The gunfire erupted shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with police officers arriving swiftly to find a scene filled with chaos. Investigators revealed that the two individuals involved were both young men who were not affiliated with the university. It was indicated that the altercation leading to the shooting stemmed from a previous disagreement between them.
Police Chief Roderick Porter confirmed that the victim was conscious and able to converse with authorities later that evening. He acknowledged that many individuals were present in the dining hall during the incident, but the exact number of shots fired has yet to be determined.
“We want to assure students, parents, faculty, and the residents of Bridgeport that the area is secure,” Porter stated in a public announcement. He also noted that increased police presence would remain on the University of Bridgeport campus until the suspect is apprehended.
University President Danielle Wilken explained that the dining hall was accessible to the public that evening due to ongoing sporting events on campus.
The University of Bridgeport is a private institution with an enrollment of approximately 4,100 undergraduate and graduate students.
