A significant fire erupted at the shipyard responsible for constructing Britain’s nuclear-powered submarines, leading to two individuals being admitted to the hospital. Authorities have reassured the public that there is “no nuclear risk” associated with the incident.
The blaze broke out shortly after midnight at the BAE Systems facility located in Barrow-in-Furness, situated in northwest England, as confirmed by Cumbria Constabulary.
Emergency services reported that the two hospitalized persons were treated for suspected smoke inhalation; fortunately, there were no additional injuries. Residents in the vicinity have been advised to remain indoors and ensure that windows and doors are kept shut to avoid any smoke exposure.
This 150-year-old shipyard, approximately 220 miles (350 kilometers) northwest of London, is actively engaged in the production of multiple nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Navy. Furthermore, it is historically known as the manufacturing site for the limited number of submarines that house the U.K.’s nuclear weaponry.
