HUNTSVILLE, Texas — In a matchup that marked the lowest scoring game in FBS this season, Sam Houston triumphed over Louisiana Tech with a score of 9-3 on a Tuesday night. Jay Ducker led the Bearkats’ attack with 72 rushing yards and a touchdown, while the team effectively took advantage of four turnovers committed by their opponents.
This latest contest continues the Bearkats’ trend, as they were part of the previous week’s lowest scoring affair, securing a tight 10-7 victory against Florida International. With this win, Sam Houston improves to a record of 7-2 overall, including 4-1 in Conference USA, marking a remarkable turnaround from their challenging start to the season where they lost all eight of their initial games in 2023.
Despite having several opportunities, Louisiana Tech struggled to convert possession into points. They found themselves inside the Sam Houston 40-yard line on seven occasions during the game, but could only manage a single score from Buck Buchanan’s 25-yard field goal in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs faced early challenges as they mishandled the ball on their opening drive. In a dismal stretch later in the first half, they turned the ball over on consecutive plays. First, quarterback Evan Bullock threw an interception that was returned 24 yards by Caleb Weaver. Then, moments later, Bullock lost control of the ball near midfield with just 38 seconds left in the half.
The breakthrough for Sam Houston came in the second half when Ducker dashed 40 yards for a touchdown on their opening drive, finding a seam through the middle of the defense before sprinting to the outside and using a crucial block to reach the end zone.
Bullock concluded the game with statistics showing 16 completions on 25 attempts for 148 yards, but he also threw an interception. In the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Jack Turner stepped in, completing 8 of 14 passes for an additional 59 yards as Louisiana Tech finished with a record of 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
